Principal’s Corner

January 20, 2012

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

Great News! Gorman is very fortunate to have six students in the Howard County G T Honor Band this year.  Congratulations to the following students: Sarah Na, Julia Lee, Alice Yoon, Sydnee Ruley, Jaylen Barrett and Jake Strovel. We applaud these students for their outstanding achievement and special thanks to Mr. Bowman for his hard work and dedication. Keep up the superb job!

On behalf of the students, staff, and parents of the Gorman Crossing, I express deep appreciation to the PTA for purchasing seven new tables that will be used for various events and activities during the school year. Additionally, we are grateful to the GCES PTA for the purchase of a portable podium with a detachable microphone and sound amplifier.  Awesome! The new podium will be utilized for concerts, assemblies, PTA functions, etc…

Once again Gorman Crossing will be utilizing the online PickAtime scheduling website.  The Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on February 15th and 16th.  You can start scheduling on Thursday, January 26th at 12:01 am and continue through Friday, February 10th until 11:59 pm.  Go to Howard County Public School’s main website, http://www.hcpss.org and click on the link for pickAtime.

Our goal is to have 100% attendance at parent/teacher conferences.  We understand that everyone’s schedules are busy, but when children see their parents/guardians take an active role in their education, research states, “they are more motivated to learn.”

Just a friendly reminder, schools are closed Monday, January 23rd. It is a professional workday for staff.

Finally, please note the invitation from the Fulton Elementary principal regarding the families being redistricted.

Have a safe relaxing weekend!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Corita Oduyoye

Principal

Dear Parents,

February conferences are fast approaching and once again GCES will be using the online PickAtime scheduling website. These conferences are for February 15th and 16th and will be with your child’s Math teacher, or in 5th grade your child’s Class 4 teacher. You can start scheduling on Thursday, January 26th at 12:01 am and continue through Friday, February 10th until 11:59 pm.

Go to Howard County Public School’s main website, http://www.hcpss.org and click on the link for pickAtime. Select the school for which you need to create an account. If you have students in different schools, you will need to go to each school's link to schedule conferences. However, you will use the same pickAtime account for all school sites.

If you are new to the system, you will need your child’s ID# that was sent home on their Interim Report in order to create your account. If you have a problem creating an account for your child, please email: Linda_morgan@hcpss.org or Janie_marrie@hcpss.org and they will send home the necessary information for you to create your account. If you need further assistance please contact Mrs. Marrie or Mrs. Morgan at 410 880-5900.

Morning Carpool Procedures

 1. Gorman Crossing Elementary School begins at 9:25.  We will open the doors each day at 9:15.  Do not allow your child to leave your car before 9:15.   There will be no one to supervise them before that time.

2. If you wish to drop your child off in the carpool loop, remain in your car.   Children should only exit the car on the curbside.  Once your child has exited the car, please continue to move from the loop so that other cars may enter.

3. Wait in the carpool line until the cars in front of you have moved on.  Do not pass other cars on the inside of the loop.

4. If you wish to walk your child to the building, park your car in the parking lot and walk with your child.   Do not allow children to walk through the parking lot alone.

  Afternoon Carpool Procedures

1.Carpool students are dismissed at approximately 3:50 p.m.

2. If you wish to wait in your car for your child, please remain in the carpool line inside your car.  Do not pass other cars on the inside of the loop.   We will load the cars that are in the loop first, allow them to leave and then move the cars next in line into the loop.   Please follow the directions of the staff on duty.  We are there for everyone’s safety.

3 If you wish to walk to the building to meet your child, please park in the parking lot and then walk to the sidewalk on the side of the building.

Although we know that everyone has busy schedules it is important for all of us to follow the procedures listed above.   If you have an appointment that you must rush to get to after school, it may be a good idea to park, meet your child on the sidewalk and then be able to leave without getting into the carpool line.   Remember – SAFETY FIRST!

Thanks in advance for your support and cooperation.
